Class Policies
Classes are limited to 6 students, so please sign up in advance. Payment is required to reserve your space. Class fees will be refunded if we are notified at least 7 days before the class begins. If the class is canceled by Spool, you will receive a full refund.
Sewing machines are provided for each student. Materials are not included unless otherwise noted.

Kaffe Fassett's Simple Shapes, Spectacular Quilts
$16 - Saturday, April 10: 1PM at The Ethical Society
Hear Kaffe Fassett speak about his latest projects and how they inform his fabric collections and the classic quilts he creates. Inspired by the every day architecture of city life, his lecture and slide presentation will be of interest to all who love color and the creative process. You’ll leave inspired to continue or start your own creative journey.
Private Sewing Lessons

If you don't see the class you're looking for or if you prefer to learn one-on-one, we offer private lessons. We are currently able to offer private lessons Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday between 12 and 5PM. Please call or stop in to discuss your goals with us and to schedule a lesson.

Ready to get sewing but not sure how to start? Then this is the class for you! You'll learn the basics of using a machine and make your first foray into rotary cutting to create a pretty and useful grocery tote.
All materials are included. Use of our sewing machines, rotary cutters, scissors, mats, and rulers are included for class sessions.
Quick Start Quilting
$65 plus materials

Learn the basic steps of creating a small quilt suitable for a child's blanket or wall hanging. You will create a basic four patch block, baste, machine quilt, and bind your quilt. You should be familiar with sewing machine basics to take this class.
Materials: thread, 2.25 yards of fabric, batting. All materials are available for purchase at Spool. Use of our sewing machines, rotary cutters, scissors, mats, and rulers are included for class sessions.
Beginning Quilting
$120 plus materials
Wednesdays, April 14, 21, 28, May 5, 12, & 19: 6-8PM
This six week course takes you through creating 2 quilt block styles, piecing a quilt top with borders, basting and machine quilting, and binding your first quilt! You should be familiar with sewing machine basics to take this class. There is sewing homework required to complete your quilt, so you should own a sewing machine or be prepared to rent time on our machines.
Materials: thread, batting, 4.5 yards of fabric total. All materials are available for purchase at Spool. Use of our sewing machines, rotary cutters, scissors, mats, and rulers are included for class sessions.
Domestic Goddess Apron $45 plus materials
Sundays, April 18 & 25: 12:30- 2:30
Aprons are a fun a way to use wild fabrics and make great gifts! We will be making the half apron in class, using Amy Butler's Domestic Goddess Apron pattern. The apron has pockets, pleats, and a tie back. We recommend that you purchase your pattern and cut out the paper pieces prior to the first class. We used laminated fabric for ours, and while you don't have to, this apron is so much fun, you know you want to! You should be familiar with sewing machine basics to take this class.
Materials: pattern, thread, .75 -1 yard main fabric, depending on chosen length. 1-1.5 yards coordinating fabric for ties, depending on length. All materials are available for purchase at Spool. Use of our sewing machines, rotary cutters, scissors, mats, and rulers are included for class sessions.
A-Line Skirts
$65 plus materials
Sundays April 18, 25, & May 2: 3-5PM
Spruce up your wardrobe with your own handmade, one of a kind skirt! Learn to use a pattern and take good measurements to ensure a proper fit. We will be using Amy Butler's Barcelona Skirts pattern. Use this pattern again and again to create a unique skirt for every day of the week!
To take this class, you should know your way around a sewing machine and have completed at least one other small project. Please come to the shop to pick out your fabric a few days prior to the class, so that you can launder it before the first class.
Materials: pattern, 2 yards fabric, 2 yards lining fabric, thread and 7" zipper. Use of our sewing machines, rotary cutters, scissors, mats, and rulers are included for class sessions.
Zipper Pouch

Envelope Pillow

Spruce up your home decor with a pretty new pillow! Learn to make a simple envelope style pillow in your favorite fabric. You must be familiar with sewing machine basics to take this class.

Piano Keys Quilt
$65 plus materials

Explore your color creativity with this amazing quilt! With the guidance of the pattern's designer, you will arrange your simple-to-piece blocks to make an unique quilt suitable for a wall hanging, lap blanket or baby quilt.
In the first class you will cut and piece the quilt top and in the second baste and begin to quilt. You must be familiar with sewing machine and rotary cutter basics to take this class.
Materials: Pattern,10 fat quarters or 1/4 yards, thread. 2 yards backing, 60" x 60" batting. Finished size: 44" x 48". Pattern includes instructions for a 72" x 80" version as well. All materials are available for purchase at Spool. Use of our sewing machines, rotary cutters, scissors, mats, and rulers are included for class sessions.
Quilted Pillow Cover
$45 plus materials
Saturdays, May 15 & 22: 3-5PM
This pillow is not only cheerful and bright, it's a great skill building project as well! You will learn to rotary cut and piece diagonal stripey blocks, and explore free motion quilting. The pillow is finished with a simple envelope style back.
You must be familiar with sewing machine & rotary cutter basics to take this class.
Materials: thread, 6 fat quarters for blocks, 1/2 yard fabric for pillow backing. 1/2 yard of muslin for pillow front backing. All materials are available for purchase at Spool. Use of our sewing machines, rotary cutters, scissors, mats, and rulers are included for class sessions.
Smocked Sundress
$65 plus materials. Pattern included.
Saturdays, June 5 & 12: 10AM-1PM
Warm weather is right around the corner, and you will need a pretty new dress to fully enjoy it! Using elastic thread, you will create a smocked top dress that looks great on all shapes and sizes. Heather Ross has generously provided a free pattern on her website to make this adorable frock.
You should be familiar with sewing basics to take this class.
Materials: thread, elastic thread, 2.5 yards fabric. All materials are available for purchase at Spool. Use of our sewing machines, rotary cutters, scissors, mats, and rulers are included for class sessions.
Wristlet Purse

Feel light and carefree, carrying just the essentials with this simple wristlet purse. Using Kwik Sew Pattern 3651, you will learn to put in a zipper, use interfacing, and attach a cute handle. This makes a perfect gift for Mother's Day!

Circle Skirt

Swoosh goes the circle skirt! This feminine and super comfy skirt can be yours! Using Kwik Sew pattern 3637, you will learn to use a pattern, construct your garment, and put in a zipper. Don't be surprised if you find yourself do a little twirl when you're wearing this skirt!

Men's Summer Shirt

Make this casual and comfortable shirt for the fella in your life - or if you're a fella, make it for yourself! In this class, you will use Kwik Sew pattern 3421 to learn to set in a sleeve, attach a collar, and make a button band. This is a perfect Father's Day gift, and a great way to kick off a summer of backyard barbeques!

Wrap Skirt

Wrap skirts are so easy and versatile - perfect for all your summer activities! Take your first steps into garment sewing with Kwik Sew pattern 2954. You'll have this skirt done in time to wear to the 4th of July picnic!

Show off your joie de vivre with the stylish and sweet Frenchy Bag. You will learn how make a pleat and pockets, use interfacing, and install a magnetic snap. You should be familiar with sewing machine basics to take this class. Please have your fabric selected and pattern pieces cut out prior to the first class.
Materials: pattern, 1.5 to 2.25 yards of fabric depending on size, interfacing, thread, magnetic snap. All materials are available for purchase at Spool. Use of our sewing machines, rotary cutters, scissors, mats, and rulers are included for class sessions.
Open Sewing
$10 per hour
Wednesday through Friday from 12-5
You are welcome to use our sewing machines, irons, and all the tools we have available, for your projects. We offer a clean, bright, quiet space to get creative. You should be familiar with sewing basics for this independent project time.
